My research titled ‘I am who I am’, focusses on the perceptions of sexual attractiveness, sexual behaviour and sexual self identity among women from ethnic cultural minorities in Amsterdam, who are (also) sexually attracted towards women.

I am writing this introduction to the second academic newsletter (register/subscribe here) in the midst of the bustle generated by the conference of the International Federation for Research on Women's History. The corridors, the library and all public spaces are filled with women academics (and a few men) passionately discussing their lines of research.

These are just a few terms from the European Women’s Thesaurus, a tool for indexing and retrieving women’s information in databases, on internet and in the collections of libraries and archives. The Thesaurus is now online on our website Aletta.nu in a new lay-out.

News from our special professors: Sexual Politics in Jakarta

On 16 April the Indonesian version of ‘Sexual Politics in Indonesia’ (Palgrave, 2002) was launched in Jakarta. Due to the threats the hardcore Muslim Militia, FPI (Muslim Defenders’ Front) had expressed to anything related to socialism, just prior to the presentation, the event was held in the headquarters of the National Commission on Human Rights.

Invitations were only sent through SMS. A planned TV show was cancelled. Yet many people attended the day. After a very successful startup, ATGENDER is proudly celebrating its first anniversary in September 2010. The association was founded to create a permanent structure for the growing field of gender research, education and documentation in Europe; as we enter our sophomore year, we welcome the rapidly growing amount of members and look forward to launching our new online portal.
