Aletta announces the Year of Women and Work

Work is a topic that affects everyone’s lives especially in economically difficult times. In 2012, Aletta will be focusing on the topic ‘Women and Work’ and will be presenting material on the subjects from her collections. The theme year will be explored in depth by means of web specials, social media, expositions, written blogs and recorded video blogs by subject matter experts and Aletta’s staff.

Spotlight on five topics

Work is an important and recurring theme in Aletta’s collections on the history and emancipation of women. During the course of the year, five subject areas will be given special attention:

    Director Saskia Wieringa receives Journal of Contemporary Asia Prize

    The co-editors of the Journal of Contemporary Asia announced that Saskia Wieringa´s paper, “Sexual Slander and the 1965/66 Mass Killings in Indonesia: Political and Methodological Considerations,” (vol. 41, no. 4) has been selected as the winner of the Journal of Contemporary Asia Prize for the best paper published in 2011.

    Archival news/ news from the archival department

    Because of the preparations for moving to our new premises last September, we have been a bit reluctant towards new acquisitions. All summer we spend most of our time packing the not yet processed archival material in acid free archival boxes. However, we did receive some interesting new material.

    The archive of the first women’s bookstore in The Netherlands arrived in June. It was founded in 1975 in Utrecht, Oudegracht 261, as the Heksenkelder. Nowadays the bookstore is known as Savannah Bay. A women’s café was attached, named the Heksenketel. The archive consists of records r...

Report on Women Loving Women

Saskia Wieringa edited the final report on a research project on the lives of women-loving-women in 8 countries (Bangladesh, Botswana, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, South Africa, the Philippines and the Central Asian region).

Over 300 women were interviewed in 14 languages by some 25 researchers. The project was co-financed by the Riek Stienstra Fund (co-ordinated by Mama Cash and Hivos) and the Kartini Asia Network (The Ford Foundation and Hivos). Aletta and E-Quality

Aletta, Institute for Women’s History and E-Quality are currently in the process of finalising the way in which the organisations will work together.

Minister Marja van Bijsterveldt, of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science had initially informed both organisations that there would be a 30% funding cut.
