Cultural heritage

Aletta collects, preserves and shares the cultural history of the women’s movement by recording the history of women – from the past and the present.

Women’s history

Women can search historical sources for their roots, but the official history books and archives mostly tell the history of men. Women’s stories have traditionally been regarded as less important – and so they are less frequently recorded and preserved.

Archive and library

Aletta’s collections will show you that women’s history indeed exists. Aletta preserves the archives of individual women and of women’s organizations, women’s diaries, and an extensive collection of photographs and posters. We also have a library with books by and about women and women’s rights and history.

Creating new knowledge

Aletta is also working to make sure that we develop new knowledge about women’s position in society and women’s rights and empowerment. By actively thinking about the themes that are likely to be of interest in the future and creating a collection that will be responsive to these questions, Aletta is collecting answers to the questions that the researchers of tomorrow are going to be looking for. Some examples of this are the Oral history project and the website of the European Sexuality Resource Center.
