Mieke Aerts appointed to the Wilhelmina Drucker Chair

Dr. Mieke Aerts (1952) has been appointed professor of ‘political history of gender in the Netherlands’ in the Faculty of the Humanities at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). She holds the Wilhelmina Drucker Chair, which has been established by the International Information Centre and Archives for the Women’s Movement (IIAV).

Mieke Aerts appointed to the Wilhelmina Drucker Chair The IIAV is delighted with Dr. Mieke Aerts’s appointment. IIAV Director Saskia Wieringa: “Mieke Aerts has been involved with the IIAV’s scholarly activities for some time. In recent years, she has been an affiliated researcher with our institution. She is a committed and extremely capable researcher. The IIAV has decided to place greater institutional emphasis on scholarly work, and Mieke fits into that strategic vision very well. We are looking forward to an excellent working relationship with her, especially in the area of women’s history, in which she specializes.”

New IIAV Chair

iiav_miekeaerts_fotooerlemans1.jpgMieke Aerts is the first professor to hold the Wilhelmina Drucker Chair. This new chair in the area of Dutch political history is the third and final chair in the three academic fields that are of special interest to the IIAV:

  • gender & ethnicity,
  • sexuality, and
  • women’s history.
Wilhelmina Drucker
The new chair is named for one of the Netherlands’ first feminists, Wilhelmina Drucker (1847-1925). Her organization, the ‘Vrije Vrouwen Vereeniging’ (Free Women’s Association), fought for legal, economic and political equality for women and was one of the important early groups in the organized women’s movement in the Netherlands. The feminist activist group Dolle Mina, founded in 1969, named itself after this early radical feminist.

Inaugural lecture and the anniversary of Dolle Mina
Mieke Aerts’s inaugural lecture will take place on January 22, 2010, during the month in which the IIAV will celebrate the fortieth anniversary of Dolle Mina. Keep an eye on our website for all of the festivities that will take place in December, or sign up to receive information automatically by
